Hi!

I am Hiya – I write about ideas in the history of science, biology, and metascience. More broadly, this blog is about thinking through ways of making science work better for everyone.

Most of my posts follow a pretty standard format but every so often I publish the less formal ‘Notes’, where I walk you through a question I have been intrigued by lately.

As for the name, Mundane Beauty is inspired by this early 20th century sensibility where scientists spoke of their work with impassioned allusions to beauty and wonder. It is moving to read stories where people were in a romantic affair (of sorts) with their work. While I make no value judgements on whether cosmic harmony is real, I think we should bring some of that care back into science.

You can find my personal website here, and follow me on X (Twitter). I am also happy to receive emails [hiyajain@substack.com] with book recommendations, feedback, or suggestions.

I write about the history of science, how ideas take shape, and why beauty still matters.
